Newhook has become the first Montreal Canadiens player since 1997 to record two-goal games in consecutive playoff matches, matching the feat of Mark Recchi. The forward scored twice in Game 3 of the second-round series against the Buffalo Sabres, a 6-2 victory that gave Montreal a 2-1 series lead.
The Canadian was named the game’s second star, finishing with a plus-2 rating, four shots on goal, two penalty minutes, four hits, and 16:43 of ice time (3:08 on the power play, 3:57 shorthanded). Newhook also scored two goals in Game 2 of the series.
He is the first Montreal player since Mark Recchi, who scored two goals in Games 3 and 4 of a series against New Jersey in 1997, to achieve back-to-back multi-goal playoff games.
