The PGA Championship will proceed without Jake Knapp, as the golfer has withdrawn due to a lingering injury.
Knapp, 31, pulled out of the season’s second major event on Monday, citing a sprained left thumb. His spot in the 156-player field at Aronimink Golf Club will be filled by Tom Hoge, who was the first alternate.
Since tying for 74th among 82 competitors at the RBC Heritage, Knapp has been sidelined. He withdrew from two high-profile $20 million signature events—the Cadillac Championship and the Truist Championship—leading up to the PGA Championship. It is believed the thumb injury occurred during the Heritage, though Knapp has yet to publicly address the issue.
The setback stalls what had been a strong season for Knapp. From January through March, he notched five top-10 finishes and secured an 11th-place result at the Masters.
Tom Hoge, 36, holds one PGA Tour victory—the 2022 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He missed the cut in all three majors last year, but his best finish in a major remains a tie for ninth at the 2022 PGA Championship.
With Hoge stepping into the field, Kevin Yu of Taiwan moves up to the first alternate position.
