Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone praised his team’s attitude and competitiveness after a hard-fought victory over Osasuna in Pamplona. Despite having no major objectives left this season, he highlighted the importance of representing the club and fighting until the end.
“The lads respected themselves and respected the shirt,” Simeone said in his post-match press conference. “Competition is everything. Today we were more clinical than in our last game, and that made the difference. Osasuna had their own needs and made it tough, but every time we strung together four passes we created chances. We wanted this win, and it gives us enthusiasm for Antoine’s farewell at the Metropolitano. I hope the fans give him the send-off he deserves – we’ve had a genius for many years, and I hope we can accompany him with a great performance.”
On the injury to Rodrigo Mendoza, Simeone added: “It happened very quickly, but the team adapted well and kept working. When we realized we could link passes, we generated opportunities – though not as often as we would have liked.”
Regarding a potential penalty claim against his side, the Argentine coach stated: “It’s clear that Musso touched the ball first.” He also praised Marc Pubill’s form: “Marc is in a great moment. He’s been working incredibly since December. I hope he maintains his work ethic and humility – everything that happens to him should help him improve as a footballer.”
When asked about Osasuna’s complaints, Simeone smiled: “How could I not understand their protests? We complain all the time ourselves.”
The win keeps Atletico in positive spirits as they prepare for Girona, the last home game for Antoine Griezmann at the Wanda Metropolitano.
