Former Japan international Atsuto Uchida (38) took the stage at the “FIFA World Cup 2026 DAZN Kickoff Conference” held in Tokyo on the 11th. He has been appointed as the “Dream Leader” for DAZN’s coverage of the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Speaking about the current state of the Japan national team, Uchida first noted, “As for what I can say now,” before offering his perspective. “There have been some injuries coming up, and I’m sure many of you are feeling a bit nervous. However, this is Moriyasu’s second World Cup campaign. The foundation he has built is completely different from before. I believe new players will emerge, and my feeling of anticipation is actually greater than any worry.”
Regarding Japan’s first World Cup opponent, the Netherlands, Uchida acknowledged, “From a global perspective, they have star players.” But he quickly added with optimism, “I think Japan has also developed the ability to compete on the world stage, so I believe this will be a very exciting World Cup.” He further expressed his hopes for victory, saying, “Japanese national team players are experiencing top-level daily lives around the world. There are many truly professional players among them, even in their private lives. I would be very happy if that effort shows results.”
During the event, four men with physiques similar to the Netherlands national team—known for having the highest average height in the world—appeared on stage. Uchida, reflecting on the opening match, sent a strong message of encouragement: “In football, there’s no room for deception. Today’s players have the strength to stand firm and fight back head-on. I’m not worried at all.”
