Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk pulled off a stunning upset on the final day of the Madrid Open, defeating top-10 player Mirra Andreeva to claim her first WTA 1000 title and create history.

Andreeva entered the final as the heavy favorite, having impressed on clay courts this season with maturity and two previous 1000-level titles. Her hard-court struggles were forgotten as she dominated on the red dirt, leading many to expect an easy victory.

Kostyuk, however, held a narrow 1-0 head-to-head advantage from their meeting in Brisbane earlier this year, where she won in straight sets. Some believed that experience could give her an edge, while others predicted the pressure of her first 1000 final would overwhelm her.

From the opening set, both players showed fierce determination. Andreeva appeared resilient, but it was Kostyuk who broke first in the sixth game. Maintaining remarkable composure, she closed out the set 6-3, putting the pressure squarely on her opponent.

The second set turned into a tense battle with breaks exchanged early. Just when a tiebreak seemed inevitable, Andreeva faltered. Kostyuk seized the decisive break and served out the match 7-5, securing the biggest win of her career.

Andreeva’s performance drew criticism. She appeared less composed than in earlier rounds, committing unforced errors and failing to convert three break points in the second set’s fourth game. Had she capitalized, the outcome might have been different.

Kostyuk’s resilience was praised. After escaping that crucial game, she grew in confidence, eventually breaking Andreeva’s unbeaten run in 1000 finals.

For Andreeva, the loss dashed hopes of a Madrid double (singles and doubles) and denied her a third 1000 title as a birthday gift. Many fans expressed disappointment, noting her mental fragility when it mattered most.

Conversely, Kostyuk’s victory wrote a new chapter in her career. She earned €1,007,165 (over 8 million yuan) and will rise to a career-high ranking of No. 15 next week. Her first 1000 title marks a significant milestone, achieved by defeating the last top-10 player standing in Madrid.
